Unusual Electrician Terms Every Homeowner Should Know

Posted on: 25 June 2015

If you are a homeowner, there is a pretty good chance that at some point in your home's lifetime you will have to call on the services of a professional electrician for help. There are all kinds of technical terms that will likely be thrown around when they come to your house for a visit. This is especially true if you happen to get more than one electrician on site to solve a problem. If you really want to be able to understand what is happening with electrical repairs and evaluations, it is a good idea to get to know some of the more unusual terms in the industry.

Octopus - If your electrician starts talking about the dangers of having an octopus at your electric outlets, he is not referring to a sea creature you never knew was taking up shop in the house. An octopus is a slang term used for  a bunch of extenders and extension cords plugged into one outlet, which can be a fire hazard.

Rabbit Ears - When you hear one electrician call out to the other to grab a set of rabbit ears from the truck, you may be a little confused. Even though rabbit ears was also another name for the old-fashioned antennas people used to have on top of their television sets, they are also a term used to describe a set of wire cutters. This is because when inverted, the hand tool looks like a rabbit with long ears.

Booger Wire - The booger wire is not something that the pediatrician used when your little one stuck something strange up his nose, it is actually a term in the electrical profession to describe a neutral wire. The booger wire is often used as a ground wire and is often coated with green or brown plastic.

Redhead Jumper - The redhead jumper will definitely be a term that catches your attention while you wait for electrical repairs. However, this is nothing more than just an insulated jumper clamp that is used to connect the current between one wire and the next.

When the friendly electricians that come to your aid start slinging terms that make you giggle, remember, these are just unusual terms that come along with the territory. If you really find a specific term fascinating or hilarious, your electrician will definitely enjoy giving you insight into the meaning so you can better understand what is taking place.
